The Wayne State University College Democrats is a student organization at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. The organization is chartered with the Michigan Federation of College Democrats. We advocate for democratic and progressive causes on campus and in our community, work to elect candidates that hold these values, and provide networking, internship, volunteering, and job opportunities.
Founded in 2014 and revamped in 2016, the WSU College Democrats have already grown into one of the most active student organizations on campus. We provide a wide range of opportunities for a diverse student body. Our members are not just political science majors and hardcore progressives – we pride ourselves on welcoming students no matter how busy or interested in Democratic politics they are. Recently, we have hosted events including election rallies, candidate forums, debate watch parties, and internship fairs. Additionally, WSU College Democrats have put countless hours into voter registration efforts, knocking on doors, and phone banking to get Democrats elected. For the quieter students, we host bi-weekly coffee hours to casually discuss current events in a safe, open-minded setting. Click here for our upcoming events.
Students can get further involved and work to achieve concrete goals by joining or starting issue-based committees, such as the Environmental Action and Women’s committees. The Environmental Action Committee, for example, helped organize a recycling drive and an environmental justice forum on campus in 2017.
Any WSU student is welcome to attend our events or committee meetings. To join the WSU College Democrats as a voting member, simply fill out the membership form.
The WSU College Democrats pledge to support the philosophies, principles, and candidates of the Democratic Party, to work to change the Democratic Party platform to better reflect the interests and values of young people, to increase student participation in Democratic affairs and political issues, and to support fellow members in their leadership endeavors within and outside the Democratic Party.
Our organization is led by an Executive Board, which is voted upon by members of Wayne State University Democrats at an annual convention. The Executive Board consists of seven positions: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Communications Director, Outreach Director, and Programs Director.
